James Sprunt (June 9, 1846 – July 9, 1924) was a Scottish-American businessman, historian, and philanthropist.
Biography
On June 9, 1846, James Sprunt was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was the son of Jane Dalziel Sprunt and merchant Alexander Sprunt. Alexander Sprunt had an unsuccessful business career in Scotland and later Trinidad. On the advice of his brother, minister James Menzies Sprunt, the family migrated to the United States, settling briefly in Kenansville, North Carolina, before moving to Wilmington, North Carolina, two years later.[1][2]
During the American Civil War, Sprunt served on various blockade runners based in Wilmington. Alongside his father, he was able to acquire a small number cotton bales during the war, and sold them at an extremely high price of 48 cents per pound.[2][3]
