Born Abey Julian Abey in the little town of Widikum in the Momo Division of the North West Region of Cameroon, Julian Abey chose music as his way of life. His heart went out for reggae music, and he never turned his back from it, ever. Julian’s love for music was heavily influenced by the things happening in his surroundings. In his home country Cameroon, there was massive Oppression and suppression of Cameroonian Citizens by its own government. More so, Julian apprehended deeply that the English speaking Cameroonians, the region where he hails from, were being marginalized by the French speaking Cameroonian. Julian believed that all Cameroonians have the right to be treated equal and participate in the nation building. Oppression and suppression was a common element in many African regimes. At a young age, his heart was torn apart when he saw images shown on television about the genocide in Rwanda, atrocities inflicted on woman in the Congo where woman were being reaped and killed, children used as child soldier in Serra Leon and in Liberia, Apartheid in South Africa, and numerous coup d’états in African countries that led to the loose of life and property. Julian could not understand why many Africans lived in object hunger and poverty and yet Africa is the richest continent in the world in terms of natural resources. Of course, Julian comprehended that most of African woes were fuelled by western imperialists who supported African dictators for their economic gains. Nelson Mandela released from jail in 1990 and inauguration as president of South Africa, was a source of inspiration to Julian as realized that through music, he could empower humanity and stand as a beacon of freedom and liberation. Julian’s father, a true music lover, had huge collections of music at home. Julian’s heart went out for reggae and he never turned his back from it. Julian listened to the music of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, Lucky Dube, Alpha Blondy, Eric Donaldson and many other roots reggae legends, He Joined St Bernadette Catholic youth Choir in Bonaberi, Cameroon, were he was an active choir member. In High School, Julian decided to try his songs on stage; the response by his follow student was enthusiastic. Julian saw music as the medium to convey his message to mankind. Julian is a champion of peace and voice to the oppress. Julian songs are philosophical, psychological, sensational, mystical and spiritual. His songs carry themes of love, liberation of the oppressed, Fight against injustice, woman emancipation and freedom. When Julian arrived in the United States, he came along with him the dream to live the American dream and make the best of what opportunity America can provide. In Chicago where he lived, Julian Abey joined a group of musicians with multifarious backgrounds from Haiti, Africa and the Americas. Julian released his first album in August 2008 and is currently recording his second album. Disillusioned with music, Julian has cut down his dread locks twice. Julian’s charisma, positive energy and heart beat on stage gives him a tremendous stage presence. Julian has been occasionally backed up by The Nazareth Band. Julian is a college graduate with a marketing degree.
