Immaculata High School is an Independent Catholic School situated in Diepkloof, SOWETO, South Africa.
MOTTO

HISTORY
The School was established at Alexandra township, Johannesburg in 1923 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. The school rapidly grew due to the growing demand of education in the Black community, the Sisters Of the Holy Cross saw the need to expand the school. A lower primary school, a higher primary school, industrial school and a boarding house were added to the original structure of the school in Alexandra.
The school began to suffer financial setbacks when the South African government of the time started to implement the Bantu Education Act n 1953. This new act intended to create separate education systems for different races in South Africa, with Black people receiving inferior quality of education. Missionary schools were put under pressure to comply with the new laws, however the Holy Cross Sisters refused to comply and thus the school lost financial aid from the government. Owing to the policy of Apartheid, many families were forcibly moved from Alexandra to SOWETO, this created a greater need for education in the newly established Township of Diepkloof and surrounds. The School also relocated to it's current site in Diepkloof, SOWETO to serve the community. However the involvement of the Sisters of the Holy Cross would come to an end when the black population in SOWETO started to rise up against the Apartheid government; this eventually led to the June 16 1976 uprisings which saw scores of school children killed while demonstrating against the introduction of Afrikaans as a compulsory medium of instruction in school. The Sisters of the Holy Cross handed the school to the Johannesburg Catholic Diocese and exited the school.
In 1990, The Bishop of Johannesburg Reginald Orsmond requested the Christian Brothers to take over the running of the school. The school is currently administered as a diocesan school, under the Diocese of Johannesburg. [1]
