General Information
Alicycliphilus is a gram-negative, non-spore-forming facultative anaerobe.[1] It is a part of the Comamonadaceae family of the Proteobacteria.[2]
Background
Many species in the Alicycliphilus genus have been identified in landfills, contaminated watercourses, and in sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants.[3] Originally believed to be Pseudomonas sp., it was eventually determined, through 16S rRNA sequencing that it belonged to the Comomonadaceae family.[4] A large proportion of organisms in this genus utilize oxygen, nitrate and chlorate terminal electron acceptors for these types of environments.[5] This information given on these species of the genus Alicycliphilus provide potential opportunities for ecological restoration, specifically bioremediation.
Metabolism
Alicycliphilus denitrificans are able to degrade hydrocarbons in the environment under both oxic and anoxic conditions. [6] Both strains of Alicycliphilus Denitrificans can use nitrate, oxygen, and nitrite as electron acceptors. [7]
