Samer Bishay Samer Bishay is a Canadian telecommunications entrepreneur known for his work in expanding connectivity in remote and underserved regions of Canada. He serves as the President and CEO of Iristel and Ice Wireless and is a co-founder of Kepler Communications, a satellite technology firm. Bishay’s efforts focus on providing accessible telecommunications infrastructure across Canada’s northern regions.

Early Life and Education

Samer Bishay was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1977 and immigrated to Canada in 1989. He completed his Honours Bachelor of Science in Space and Communications Science at York University.[1]

Career

Iristel

In 1999, Bishay founded Iristel, a telecommunications company specializing in Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. Under his leadership, Iristel has grown into one of Canada’s largest Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC), offering services across the country.[2]

Ice Wireless

In 2009, Bishay acquired Ice Wireless, a mobile network provider operating in remote areas of Canada, including the Arctic. Ice Wireless has established roaming agreements with major Canadian carriers, such as Rogers and Videotron.[3]

Kepler Communications

In 2015, Bishay co-founded Kepler Communications, a company focused on deploying a constellation of nano-satellites to enable global connectivity.[4]

Karrier One

In 2023, Bishay co-founded Karrier One, a decentralized mobile network that aims to enhance telecommunications security and user experience through blockchain technology.[5]

Advocacy

Bishay advocates for increased telecommunications access in Northern Canada and has supported government transparency. He was involved in a legal dispute with the Canada Revenue Agency over regulatory issues.[6]

Honors and Awards

In 2019, Bishay was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 34 Signal Regiment in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was also named one of Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants in 2020.[7]

Philanthropy

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bishay co-founded the Healing Wings Foundation in 2020 to support Arctic communities with infrastructure and provide resources for Canadian Armed Forces personnel and veterans.[8]
