Somerset Space Walk

Article went live lunchtime 20 Sept 2010

Remaining tasks:

  • Gallery of planet model pics  Done
  • Find dead link:"Walk the Walk………the Somerset Space Walk" (pdf). (Parrett People – Issue 15). The River Parrett Trail. Spring/Summer 2007. Retrieved 2008-10-23. {{cite web}}: Check date values in: |date= (help)(~6.3MB)
  • Find the ref for 'the newspaper cutting'
  • Add refs for PPARC and COPUS are on the Space Walk leaflets
  • Text for Earth plaque is no longer available from the SCC webpage -- need to make sure that the Commons photos show the text!
  • From the calculations: [Assumption]: An information panel on the Sun model indicates the size and distance of the nearest star. [The pdf leaflet implies that this distance is stated somewhere, and this is the logical place for it!]
  • Request archiving the links, particularly: "BOBCAT". Allard's Computer Museum, Groningen. Retrieved 2009-03-06.

Also, copied from ToDo page:

Using Sandbox 2 and aiming for a DYK - should be easy

  1. Create in sandbox
  2. See Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail for suitable categories
  3. Useful personal webpage (Wheeler family) of walk (with further links and set of photos)
  4. See Otford (also mentioned on prev. link) for 'claim'
  5. See Solar system model which seems to miss the Somerset model!
  6. See Sweden Solar System which is generally regarded as the largest scale model...
  7. add links: Waterscape.com, leaflet (pdf)
  8. Add text+refs from the pdf leaflet
  9. Continue using the Waterscape.com page for snippets (but use other refs first)
  10. Pictures of Sun and Jupiter available at Geograph (NOT available at STE!!)
  11. Utilise Parrett People Issue 15
  12. Any sign of refs to walk at http://www.somerset-waterways.org/ (who are associated with the model)? It is mentioned, in passing.
  13. Calculate distance of Mars from Sun
  14. Add coords of Sun model Someone else can do this!
  15. Email Somerset Waterways Development Trust or Somerset County Council with queries (see below) done + partly successful
  16. Once 'live', add to:
  17. Determine suitable 'hook' for DYK + submit -- see article talk page
  18. Create (hidden) table of coords for each planet and then contact Andy MabbottSomeone else can do this!

Queries:

Questions to put to Somerset CC/SWDT (particularly looking for references, but simple confirmation is a good start!)

  • What are the pillars made of (stone/concrete/other)? Concrete - see Youngman email
  • What are the models made of (stainless steel?) Steel, definitely, stainless?
  • How big is the Sun model? 14 tons! (see cutting)
  • How tall are the other models?
  • Who wrote the captions, was it Pip Youngman? Yes
  • Was Pip Youngman a Somerset resident (he has a local contact number in an old copy of the pdf leaflet)? Yes
  • Is there information about the 'nearest star' on the Sun model? -- what is it? Yes - see Mum's photos!
  • When were the models refurbished? Isn't "2007" enough?
  • Anything else you can tell us...? No...
