David Warren Scott is a American mathematician. His areas of research in the field of mathematical statistics include Nonparametric Density Estimation, Computational Statistics, Data Visualization, and Data Mining.[2] In 1990, he was honored by the American Statistical Association (ASA) , chosen to be an ASA Fellow.
Education
Scott received his B.A. degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics in 1972 from Rice University. He earned his Master of Arts degree and PhD in Mathematical Sciences from Rice in 1975 and [3][1] 1976 respectively. His PhD thesis — Nonparametric Probability Density Estimation by Optimization Theoretic Techniques — was directed by Richard A. Tapia and John R. Thompson.

Publications
Scott is the author of the textbook "Multivariate Density Estimation: Theory, Practice, and Visualization (John Wiley & Sons, 1992).[4] The revised second edition was published in 2015.[5] His book, Statistics: A Concise Mathematical Introduction for Students, Scientists, and Engineers (Wiley, 2015), was released on July 2, 2020.[6]
