What I'm looking for in an Admin
Here's what it would take to get me to support you as an Administrator:
- Do you have a reason to use the tools? - Will the tools make your work easier or faster, or are we short of admins in an area that you're prepared to work in?
- Do you have sufficient experience to use the tools with a minimum of mistakes? - Everyone makes mistakes but there's no point in giving you the tools if you're going to create more problems than you solve. This includes work in, and a firm grasp of the policies relevant to, the areas you intend to work in (the notability guidelines for AfD, the CSD criteria for speedy deletion, etc), and normally a good grasp of the fundamentals for all areas across Wikipedia including such areas as the featured article criteria, the image fair use and copyright system, and the dispute resolution processes.
- Are you unlikely to deliberately misuse the tools? - Do you have a history of vandalism, sockpuppetry, temper tantrums, edit warring, or incivility? Do you have trouble keeping calm in a conflict? Do you have a difficulty with seeing the big picture? Are you likely to use your power to push a position that doesn't have consensus within the Wikipedia community? If so, it's probably not wise to give you the tools.
- Are you likely to accept criticism and learn from mistakes? - No admin has a perfect record; the key is to accept criticism in good faith (even if it isn't offered in that spirit) and to continue to seek better and more harmonious ways of exercising your powers and responsibilities. An important part of this is an ability to communicate, including strong competency in persuasive written English.
If you meet the four criteria above, I can't see any good reason to not give you the tools. Note that a certain minimum threshold of activity and experience is usually required in order to provide the answers to the above questions.
