Musical Experience

Early Music • Recorder groups, my parents also, in NJ 1958-1970. • Collegium Musicum Brandeis University 1976-1981. • Studied ensemble and performance practice with Lanoue Davenport and Music for a While 1975 Sarah Lawrence College.

Saval Sachar Grant – Research in Spain • August 1979 Discovered in the back of an organ at the Colegiata de San Pedro in Lerma Spain: a 16th Century Windband Manuscript choirbook format, 4-8 players per piece. It was photographed and the binding etc was examined for codicological evidence. Preliminary examination included related documents, two original damaged organs, a galley for wind players, a beautiful damaged ducal palace, related convents and monasteries still extant from the 16th century. I took back the photos and gave a set to my colleague Doug Kirk, who made it the basis of his dissertation 1993 at McGill University in Montreal. After publication, he organized a tour of Spain with the Gabrielli Consort, Boston Shawm and Sackbut Ensemble, and other singers, musicians, and recording specialists. I accompanied the ensemble three times including 1997 and a tour that culminated in a recording in the Colegiata de San Pedro by DGG Archiv 9/2001. A tour in Spain with a final concert at El Escorial at the Royal Chapel ended with the 9/11 disaster. This windband manuscript was printed as a compete edition as the first volume of the Amherst Early Odhecaton Edition, published by Amherst Early Music 2003.

• Founded Alia Musica in 1978, an early music ensemble with sackbut, shawms, cornetti, percussion, string instruments and voice performing in greater Boston. Received a Quality of Life grant from the Cambridge Arts Council 1979.

Choral Music • Sang in choirs and pickup groups in NJ and NYC 1960-1970. Open sings at Church of St John the Divine in NYC including the Bach B-minor Mass, and similar classics.

• 1970-1976 organized choirs and conducted for Bread and Puppet Tours in US, Canada, Europe, Iran, and Cuba.

• Co-founded the Word of Mouth Chorus in Plainfield VT in 1973 with Larry Gordon. Organized performances of Bach St Matthew Passion, Carrissimi Jeptha, Three Penney Opera.

• Attended Emanuel Music performances of Bach cantata series 1976 to 1989.

• Musical director, conductor, and co-founder of Cambridge Peace and Justice Chorus. Current.

Opera • Attended the Metropolitan Opera 1963-1970, from Un Ballo in Maschera 1963 to Turandot in 1970.

• Attended the live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera 2005 through the present.

• Currently working with Severyn T. Bruyn on a newly composed Opera with libretto and musical concepts by Severyn. It is entitled The Teachers of Norway.

Classical Music • Studied Piano and French horn in NJ • Organized, managed and played horn with a brass trio, performing in NJ and NY. • Played French Horn in o All County Orchestra o All State Orchestra o Little Symphony of Newark where I was an assistant to the conductor. • Attended the NY Philharmonic Orchestra from 1964 to 1970, Leonard Bernstein Conducting and George Szell. Broad background in the classics and new music. • Organized performances of Bach St Matthew Passion, Carrissimi Jeptha, Three Penney Opera in Vermont 1972-76. • Studies at Brandeis 1976-1981 o Musicology – Joshua Rifkin (Mentor), Paul Brainard, Margaret Bent, Alan Keilor. o Music Composition – Seymor Shifrin (Mentor), Marty Boykan, o Harold Shapiro – Electronic Music, Arranging, Orchestration o Conducting – James Olesen. • Supported the Landmark Orchestra in Boston and got to know Charles Ansbacher in his last years. Encouraged him to go to Vietnam even though he was sick to conduct the Hanoi Symphony. Currently hoping to work with them to increase musical literacy.
