The Battle of Britain is the name given to an exhibition match of Australian rules football played between the Carlton Blues and the North Melbourne Kangaroos in 1987. Despite supposedly being a "friendly" match, the game was noted for its extreme violence, with Carlton's Ian Aitken being knocked unconscious by a punch thrown by North Melbourne's Alastair Clarkson, several other players injured, and six players suspended for varying periods of time.[3]

Background

Exhibition Games

During the 1980s the Victorian Football League made several attempts to showcase the game of Australian rules football outside of Australia, with an eye to eventually spreading the game overseas.[citation needed]

Aftermath

After the game was finished, both teams were presented with medals. The preceding violence and many minor injuries suffered by the players present made this a somewhat awkward affair.[3] The tempers that flared during the match largely cooled afterwards: Clarkson and Buckley went for a drink together after the game ended.[3]
