Sergeant Major (Retired) Derek D. Johnson, born in Fort Worth, Texas joined the United States Army in Jun 1989 graduated from Polytechnic High School, Fort Worth, Texas as a Personnel Administration Specialist which today is known as a Human Resource Specialist.

He held the position as the Deputy Chief of Staff G1 Sergeant Major (Army G1 Sergeant Major) in the United States Army as his last assignment in the military. He was responsible for policies that impact the total Army on Leader Development, Professional development, recruiting, hiring, organizational change management and Talent Management/Acquisition as the senior enlisted Human Resource Professional.

Most notable programs he was responsible for the Army today, during his time as the Army G1 Sergeant Major.

a. Implementation of the Army’s Credentialing Assistance Program: Allowing every service member to signup up for a license/credential that will contribute to Total Army readiness, support Soldiers’ professional development, retain quality Soldiers and prepare Soldiers for meaningful employment upon transition from military service.

b. Changing of the Army DA Centralized Promotion to Talent Assessment Boards process: Moving from a 50 year old process to focus on Talent Management that will facilitate accomplishment of the Army's strategic objectives to improve readiness and sustain a workforce of trusted professionals by employing NCOs to the maximum effect while mitigating a mismatch of people and requirements.

Sergeant Major Johnson’s has held many assignments and key leadership positions in HR from the direct to the strategic levels of the Army. These positions and assignments to include: Personnel Management Specialist, Headquarters G1, Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Chaffee/LRAFB, AR; Strength Management Branch, Joint Readiness Training Center & Ft. Polk, LA; Personnel Administrative Sergeant, Warrior Brigade; Personnel Service Sergeant, 5th Maintenance Company, 51st Maintenance Battalion, Kaiserslautern Germany; SIDPERS/Senior Personnel NCO, A CO, Soldier Support Battalion, 82d Division; Senior Personnel NCO, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Battalion; BCT S1 NCOIC, 504th Brigade Combat Team; First Sergeant, 82d Replacement Detachment, Fort Bragg, NC; Senior Human Resources NCO, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, AK; Adjutant Sergeant Major, HQ Forces Command, Fort McPherson, GA. Forces Command G1 Sergeant Major, Fort Bragg, NC.

SGM Johnson has attended and completed many schools to include the Executive Leaders Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Resident Course, Force Management Course, First Sergeant Course, Senior Leaders Course, Advance Leaders Course, Warrior Leaders Course, Combat Life Savers Course and Master Resilience Training Course.

His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and NCO Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 5, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Global War on Terrorism Medal, Horatio Gates Bronze Medal, Combat Action Badge, Canadian Jump Wings and Airborne Badge.

Sergeant Major Derek Johnson was recognized throughout his career by the Adjutant General Corps and was selected as a 2017 Distinguished Member of the Regiment recipient.

Sergeant Major Johnson civilian education includes MBA in Business Administration with a concentration of Military Operations from Trident University. He is pursuing the Leader and Youth Mentor Certifications under the John Maxwell program.

Derek Johnson continues to be an active member in the community, church, mentorship programs and enjoys giving back. He currently lives in the Fairfax county and continues to be an advocate for our military and veterans. He’s happily married to Ivey Johnson.
