Micro-Dashboards
For many years the Information Technology (IT) industry/experts and more recently the Business Intelligence (BI) industry/experts have been promising the effective use of information to enable business. One way that these experts have been delivering this 'information' is through the use of dashboards. Typically these dashboards are built for a specific purpose, for example, a HR dashboard with many metrics representing the performance of human resources within the business (Staff Numbers, Overtime, Hours Worked, Unscheduled Absence, etc), or a Finance dashboard with many metrics representing the performance of financial aspects of the business (EBIT, Total Expenses, ROIC, Labour Expense, WACC, etc). Whilst this approach to dashboard construction is beneficial and allows the business to look a specific tailored views of information, it does not allow the end-user to select the measures that they interested in - they can't 'choose their own adventure'. To enable this behaviour of allowing users to choose the content relevant to them and display in an appropriate way in a portal environment the approach to dashboard development should focus on the delivery of Micro-Dashboards - that is extremely small, tbc.
