While in Mexico in the mid 90’s David Wiley was approached by the Spirit of Fire who asked him to become a shaman. Not that he was looking for this or knew what was implied in the role, however he accepted because of the miracle of the apparition. David would learn that this was because he had a unique combination of traits and skillset Grandfather Fire needed to help fulfill a monumental task: Reach out to the people of our modern world and provide help while teaching how to live life more aligned with the nature of the world through awareness, connection and engagement. This was something well understood through his and other elders (and traditionally passed on from one generation to another. This was when David Wiley began the long road of receiving training, teachings and eventual initiation into two living indigenous traditions in Mexico: the Nahua & the Huichol.

One-quarter of a century ago, as an unprecedented event, David Wiley was approached by the Spirit of Fire, while he was in Mexico working as an international trade consultant between the US, Canada, and Mexico, and was in the need of some help himself. The Spirit of Fire, Tatewari, Huehueteotl, Xiuhtecuhtli or Grandfather Fire, as he is known in different cultures, asked him to Be-In-Service to humanity to help him bridge the indigenous ancestral wisdom to the modern world during this challenging times, and in exchange, he would support him to relieve his broken heart and reunite him with his children again.

Don David Wiley found his calling after experiencing this phenomenon that is not strange in many cultures but was something completely unexpected for him. This odd-looking little old man who knew perfectly well what David was feeling and thinking at the moment he made himself present in his life, told him that he would be able to fix all his problems if he agreed to become a Shaman. Grandfather Fire seemed to think that David Wiley had just the right combination of balanced personality traits, organizational skills, business-orientated insight, healing path vocation, family traditional values, discipline, a very big heart and time on his hands. Amongst other things, he seemed to be just where Grandfather Fire wanted him to be. If not ready, because it would take him almost a year of learning, training, and initiation to become a Shaman, he was available.

David had to look up in the dictionary what did “Shaman” mean, and even though he did not understand the full scope of what that implied at that particular moment in time, something inside him was telling him that he had nothing to lose and everything to gain if he was able to see his daughter and son again… and give it a try at helping humanity at the same time.

From the moment when David decided to serve as Grandfather Fire’s emissary his life changed completely. Not only did he have to immediately learn how to pray along with all the energetical and spiritual operational basics behind this, but he also began years of intense training first in the Nahua Tradition under Don Lucio Campo Elizalde’s tutelage.

Don Lucio was a Caporal Mayor, head of his lineage, from the Mexican Highlands in Nepopualco Morelos, who was already expecting David’s arrival because he was looped-in by the spirits that the Spirit of Fire would be sending an apprentice who needed to be taught the ways of the Nahua Shamans’; to learn how to communicate with the Weather Beings as a Granicero (from the Spanish word for Hail, ‘Granizo’) including everything this implies, and also learn how to heal thru the ancestral traditional Nahua wisdom as a Tepahtiani. Don Lucio who has a very interesting story himself, as so do every individual who has a calling to serve as a weather worker, had dreamt of the time when Tiemperos (from the Spanish word for Weather, ‘Tiempo’) from all over the world would be summoned to heal the relationship of humans and the weather beings and recover the lost wisdom and traditions of the Quiatlazques. As you could imagine, Don Lucio was surprised to find out that the Spirit of Fire had chosen ‘a Gringo’ with no background on shamanism what so ever, but he never questioned why had Huehueteotl, from the Nahua that means ‘Very old God,’ had chosen him, since he was just a simple human assisting the Timeless Great Spirits to make the best of his time on Earth and share the gifts that were lent to him in this lifetime.

Many years of pilgrimage, enduring and experiencing how Don Lucio lived and incorporating rituals and ceremonial ‘mandas’ into his day to day life, through initiation. After learning the olden ways of the people of that land, David Wiley was named as the one who would continue with Don Lucio’s work as a Lineage Holder, the first one in History to do so with someone who is not part of their cultural roots.

To 2020 there are over 70 active weather workers from different countries, who come every spring to David’s main Nahua altar or Mayoría in Tepoztlán, Morelos, México, to renew their vows to their calling and the Weather Beings. They all go back to their homeland and take with them the response-ability to restore the relationship between humans and nature and to procure healthy weather cycles that endure life on the planet.

In this case, he did not walk alone through these surreal transformational experiences, since he met Eliot Cowan, who had also received a calling to become a Mara’akame or ^[1] Healer.

It was under the guardianship of Don Guadalupe González Ríos, better known as Don Lupe, that David underwent a bit more than half a decade of hard training and living with the people in the Sierra Madre at San Andrés Cohamiata “TateiKie” in the Wixárika language.
