Smoulder is a Canadian/American epic doom metal band[1], currently signed to Cruz del Sur Records. The band plays a fusion of epic doom metal[2], traditional heavy metal[3], power metal and speed metal[4].
History
Smoulder was formed in 2013 by guitarist and vocalist S. Vincent (formerly of metal acts Gatekrashör, HROM, Manacle[5]) and drummer Sarah Kitteringham in Calgary, Alberta. The duo relocated to Toronto, Ontario in 2016, where Sarah took over on vocals and S. Vincent focused exclusively on guitars. The duo then recruited Collin Wolff on guitar and Kevin Hester on drums.[6].
Their debut demo 'The Sword Woman' was recorded in October 2017 at Straightaway Productions by Lucas Akker and mixed & mastered by Ryan Kennedy.[7] It was released by Hoove Child Records digitally and on cassette on April 20, 2018. It featured Ryan Donoho on bass.[8] Shortly after its release, the band performed at the 2018 rendition of the Hammer of Doom Festival in Wurzburg, Germany alongside Coven, While Heaven Wept, Batushka, and more.
The band's debut album 'Times of Obscene Evil & Wil Daring' was recorded at the Lincoln County Social Club in Toronto and Swift Road Studios in Chicago, and mixed and mastered by Arthur Rizk. It was released by Cruz del Sur Records on April 19, 2019.[9] The album cover features "The Well of Shuian" artwork by fantasy artist Michael Whelan. It is the first recording to feature bassist Adam Blake, who joined the band in 2018.[10]. It was named one of the best metal albums of April 2019 by Bandcamp Daily[11] and listed by Decibel Magazine as one of the top 40 albums of 2019.[12].
Smoulder followed up their debut with the 'Dream Quest Ends' EP on March 13, 2020[13], whose release was scheduled to coincide with their appearance at Up the Hammers Festival in Athens and a tour of Greece[14]. The EP again featured artwork by Michael Whelan of his Lore of the Witch World painting. The festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smoulder's track "Warrior Witch of Hel" was featured on Metal Massacre XV, released by Metal Blade Records in May 2021.[15]
