Guardian Angel Boarding School located in Oneida, Wisconsin about five miles west of Green Bay. The school came into being due to proceedings taken by the federal government with the building of an Indian boarding school in 1892. The school opened in 1893 under the control of the bureau of Indian affairs with the intent of bringing the Indians into the American way of life. To establish this , Indian children were taken from their homes and families to attend the school. It was formerly closed in 1919. The school lay dormant until 1924 when it was purchased by the Catholic Church and was reopened in 1925 as a boarding school and a summer camp. In it's twenty nine year history the school had two directors. The first being Father Le mieux who operated the schoool for twenty three years until 1948 when Father Ott took over as the director. The Fransican Sisters were in charge of the day to day operations of the school and were the ones who took care of the children. The Sisters took care of the children's every need such as when they were not feeling well, homesick, or just needing some thing as minor as tying their shoes. They were our mothers, teachers and disciplinarians. In the twenty nine year history of the school it was home to about 1900 boys and girls. The year 1947 was the last year for girls to attend. The school remained open until 1953. In 1954 it was demolished and rebuilt as a seminary. It remained a seminary until 1984 when it was sold back to the Oneida Indian tribe who currently operate the facility now known as The Norbert Hill Center. There have been two books written about the Guardian Angel school, One by Ken Keyser titled The Kids of the Guardian Angel Boarding School and one by me, Dan Williams titled Guardian Angel Boarding School Oneida, Wisconsin.
