The Mountain View Progressive Airport was an airport in Mountain View, California. It was established in 1936, and disestablished in the early 1950s.

History

The Mountain View Progressive Airport was established in 1936 by Progressive Air Services and it's owner, John Simonic. It served Mountain View, California, and nearby unincorporated areas until the early 1950s, when it was disestablished and it's land sold to Joseph Eichler for redevelopment into a housing tract.

Notable Events

During it's time in operation, the airfield experienced on major accident. In January of 1946, an airplane carrying a pilot and passenger crashed on approach to the field from the south, crashing at the Intersection of Alma and Rengstorff Streets just south of the field. The pilot was killed and the passenger badly injured.

Infrastructure

The airport had a 50 acre field with two gravel and sod runways, they coincided at their northern ends at an unpaved apron area where the airport buildings were located, near Middlefield Road. Support buildings included two large 80'x50' airplane hangers and an airport office, with an aircraft parking area alongside the runway nearest them.

Services

The Mountain View Progressive Airport was primarily for small aircraft operations, supporting crop dusting, flight training, and general aviation flying. It was also home to a dedicated flying school, which offered approved C.A.A instructors for private, commercial, and flight training courses. The airport also offered general aircraft maintenance and repair services. The field also ran at least one flight of airmail to San Francisco, starting in 1938.
