For those who were at the Cadogan Hall concert by the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma on Tuesday 23rd January 2007,the encore was the Notturno by Giuseppe Martucci. This was not only a rare performance of this piece in England, but had to be regarded as being in authoritative hands, as the conductor, Maestro Francesco La Vecchia, founded the Academia Internazionale di Musica di Roma in 1978, and had already given the audience the opportunity to hear the Partita for Orchestra by another composer lesser known to English listeners - Goffredo Petrassi.
Those who had been attracted to the concert by Otterino Respighi`s Pines of Rome, not only enjoyed a superb performance, but were drawn in to a fascinating exposure to early twentieth century Italian orchestral music. As it this were not enough, Maestro La Vecchia juxtaposed Shostakovich`s first violin concerto, passionately and movingly played by the Russian violinist, Boris Belkin. An orchestra which is only a little over four years old has already left a distinctive mark on London`s classical music.
