Hoël I of Brittany

Hoël I of Brittany was the illegimate son of Alan II Wrybeard of Brittany and a noblewoman called Judith.[1] He was Count of Nantes from 960 to 981.

After the death of Alan II of Brittany, power was divided between the Counts of Nantes and the Counts of Rennes.[2] Rennes was a vassal of the counts of Blois, while Nantes was allied to Anjou. In 975 this rivalry became an open conflict and Hoel pillaged the district of Rennes right up to the city walls.[3]

At the death of Bishop Walter I of Nantes in 981, Hoel had his own brother Guerec elected in his place and sent him to Tours to be consecrated by the Archbishop. However soon after this, Hoël was assasinated by a man called Galuron. Guerec left Tours before his consecration and hurried back to Nantes where he was proclaimed count by the people of Nantes.[4]

Hoël had two sons by an unknown wife:

  • Judicaël (c979-1004); Count of Nantes
  • Hoël
