Introduction

Gwendolyn is one of five major protagonists in Odin Sphere. She is daughter of the Demon Lord Odin and Princess of Ragnanival. Both her and her sister Griselda are Valkyries.

Biography Atlus describes Gwendolyn as a "force of righteous fury" [2] and when her sister Griselda dies in a battle against The Vanir (Faeries) [3] inherits a powerful Psypher Spear. [4] Oswald, the Vanir's Shaadow Knight for some reason spares Gwendolyn's life. Gwendolyn returns from battle.

After a further battle with the Vanir,,Gwendolyn believes she has secured the Cauldron. But Velvet, The Forest Witch intervenes and deactivates it using The Ring Titrel. Gwendolyn follows Velvet in persuit to The Forest of Elrit. There, they fight until Odin intervenes, revealing that Velvet is his illegitmate daughter by Ariel, a Princess of a previous enemy. Odin's General Brigan overhears. He seizes Velvet and plans to sacrifice her to the dragon Wagner who now holds the ring. Back in Ragnanival Odin is conflicted, and for a time so is Gwendolyn. A part of her tells herself that if she allows Velvet to be sacrificed, she will then be Odin's only surviving daughter, and would finally achieve his approval. However, she rejects these dark thoughts, preferring to spare her father's suffering. She heads off to save Velvet.

Gwendolyn saves Velvet and kills Brigan. For this, Gwendolyn is branded a traitor. As punishment, Odin puts her to sleep telling her she will be married to the enemy when she awakens

Gwendolyn wakes in the Abandoned Castle, accepting her fate that she is now subject to her husband. But Oswald makes it clear that she is not his property, and gives her The Ring Titrel as a symbol of their marriage. With this ring, Gwendolyn seizes her opportunity to give this to her father, only to find he is at the mercy of the dead Brigan and Odette, The Queen of the Underworld, who has her own grudge against Odin for stealing her jewels. She rescues her father and hands over the ring. She is then shocked when Odin reveals he sent Oswald to slay Wagner for her hand in marriage. Feeling moved by this, she returns to Oswald's side

Gwendolyn then finds that she has to save Oswald from the hands of King Onyx, who had also been promised a marriage with her. King Onyx sets Leventhan onto Oswald, and Gwendolyn saves him from death just in time. Impressed, King Onyx lets them both go.

While nursing Oswald back to health, he tells her some history regarding his weapon The Belderiver. Then, a Valkyrie shows up and informs her that Odin has been defeated by The Vanir, who have stolen the ring. Oswald is heartbroken to hear this as he feels betrayed by Gwendolyn. Gwendolyn heads to Ringford and after battle with Mercedes, gets the ring back.

Upon her return she discovers Oswald has been taken to the Underworld. So, she stands her ground with her father refusing to give him the ring while Oswald's life is in danger. Grudgingly he shows her the path he uses to access The Netherworld. There she does battle with Odette and kills her. In her dying breath Odette informs Gwendolyn that her death means the path will close forever and that death will become a worse fate. As the place falls apart, she escapes with Oswald. Odin helps them. But still, she refuses to give the ring to her father and "she will not let him have it without killing her as well." Odin is angry but cannot bear to kill his daughter, so he lets her leave with Oswald.

Back at The Abandoned Castle, Gwendolyn and Oswald reaffirm their mutual love. [5]

In Battle

Gwendolyn is a well rounded character, which is her strength in the game. Unlike other characters, she is capable handling any monster in any situation. At the start of the game, Gwendolyn has very potent ice magic, which gets formidably strong later in the game. She is also physically strong and good at combos. Has two moves, Skill Link and Assault High meaning her attack power increases the more combos she inflicts. Passive moves, like her Ariel Force can power through mini-bosses and bosses alike. Her POW and PP are well balanced. Having said that, her ultimate attack Gungnir is formidable as it launches a large spear, attacking every enemy on the map.

Other key moves are: Beak Dive (which allows Gwendolyn to pierce through enemies and land behind them) Rising Crescent (knocking enemies up in the air for an Aerial combo) Blizzard (freezing groups of enemies) Beatdown (Damage to fallen enemies) and if you want some extra Ice damage, Icebreaker.

Like all other main characters, she will collect various helpful recipes throughout the game, which give you extra items to attack, defend and level up with.
