Born to Postmaster Sri. HT Ranganna and Smt. AC Sharadamma at Hassan in Karnatak on 18 Oct 1930 HR Chandravadana Rao has his BSc (1949) BT (1952) degrees from the Univ of Mysore and MA (Engligh) from BHU (1962). He served the Dept of Public Instruction for more than 35 Years and he worked as Principal at the end of his service for 5 Years, and after his retirement joined RIMSE (Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education, Mysore) as a faculty member and served the institute for about 6 years. He rendered his services in the Distance Education Program too. Rao has visited the UK, Europe and the USA three or four times.

Sri HR Chandravadana Rao has to his credit more than 40 Books. However, most of the books are the translations from English. He has successfully translated world famous novels such as The City of Joy , Freedom at Mid-night and Fire on the Mountain. Bettakke Benki the translation of Fire on the Mountain was published by Central Sahitya Akademy, Delhi. He has brought out Kannada abridged version of the Vicar of Wakefiled and David Copperfield and some detective novellets also.

Sri Rao has a bias for short stories. Apart from Katha Guchcha and Mattondu Katha Guchcha (Co-author Smt. Suvasini Subramanya) he has translated and published short stores of O'Henry, Guy De Maupassant, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde etc.

Sri Rao has worked as a teacher and hence it is no wonder he has translated/written short stories for Children too. For neo literates, his book Arogyave Bhagya was published by Kannada Sahitya Parishat Bangalore.

Churchill Mahashaya is a biography that Sri Rao has published.

His plays have been broadcast from AIR, Mysore.

In short, Sri Rao has worked in all the departments of literature like Short Stories, Novels, Plays and Essays. Often his writings especially short stories appear in popular Kannada magazines.

Mysuru Akashavani has broadcast his "Chintanagalu" more than forty times and four or five plays in kannada. Chandana TV interviewed him to know his life literary works. Rao;s stories and articles now and then appear in magazines like Kasturi, Tushara, Karma Veera and weekly editions of Kannada Prabha and Udayavani.
