Phase one - To create a new article stub which will survive

Step one - Create a new article stub

Primer: A stub is an article containing only a few sentences of text which — though providing some useful information — is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject, and which is capable of expansion. It is the first step to creating a comprehensive, reliable and useful article on Wikipedia.

Aim : To create a new article
Instructions :
- Type the following phrase in the Search box and press the Search button : Carnatic (battle honour)
- The search will put up suggestions but will not find the article with exactly this name. The search page will place a message after search option check-boxes and the suggested wikipedia articles, to the effect that you may create the page named "Carnatic (battle honour)", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered. The phrase "Carnatic (battle honour)" will be a red link if uncreated and blue if created.
- Click the red link to create the blank page.
- Copy the text given under "Material to be added" and paste it in the blank page edit box. Copy the text from this page itself (and not by pressing the edit link for this section).
- After pasting, press the "Review" button under the edit button. If you scroll up, you can see how the amended article will look. This preview permits typos or other errors to be detected and corrected before saving. If there is an error, correct it and review again till it is correct in all respects.
- Give an edit summary in the text box below the edit window. Suggested edit summary for this edit is -"Created new article."
- Press "Save".

Step two - Add the first reference

Primer:
* All information needs to be provided with a reliable source. The source needs to be cited, preferably inline as has been done here in this exercise. Here we use a "cite book" template to neatly arrange the and display the information of the source. The "cite book" template is enclosed in "<ref></ref>"html-style tags.
* In addition to this we need to add a references section at the bottom of the article which will list the references.

Aim : To add a reference to the new article & a section titled "References" at the end of the article.
Instructions : Add the reference (material in the first text-box) immediately next to the full-stop at the end of the sentence in the article-stub. Press enter twice to create two blank lines and then add the material in the second text-box.

Step three - Format the first sentance of the lead

Primer: The opening section of a Wikipedia article is called a "lead" or "lede" and needs to be formatted as per the concerned Manual of Style. Since our lead consists of one sentence only, the formatting will need to be done using the guidelines for formatting the first sentance of leads in Wikipedia.

The first sentence must contain the words which comprise the article title and these should be made boldface. Since this particular title is not a single word or term but consists of two terms each of which mean different things from their their combined use in the title, they also need to be wikilinked.

Wikilinking is not to be restricted to just the title terms, but to any term which provides relevant connections to the subject of another article that will help readers understand the article more fully (see the example below). This can include people, events and topics that already have an article or that clearly deserve one, so long as the link is relevant to the article in question.

Aim : Format the first sentance of the lead.
Instructions :
- Boldface the following words/phrases of the lead. This is to be done by surrounding the word/phrase by three single apostrophes (example - '''boldfaced term'''):
  - Carnatic
  - battle honour
- Provide wikilinking to the following terms of the lead. A word of phrase can be wikilinked by surrounding it with two opening and closing square brackets (example - [[Wikilinked term]]). While providing wikilinking to the terms comprising the title, ensure that the square brackets are placed inside the three single apostrophes which provide bolding (example - '''[[bolded wikilinked phrase]]''').

Step four - Add a category

Primer:

Categories help us navigate, sort, find articles, find related articles, see how information is organised, etc. It is absolutely essential to add categories to an article.

Wikipedia has a category tree. The topmost category is Category:Contents and everything else is a subcategory of it or of other subcategories.

Each article is linked to one or more parts of the tree by allotting categories. Category wikilinks of an article are seen at the bottom of a wikipage. * Read the following for more information on categories:

How to find appropriate categories for a new article

Often it is difficult to categorise a new article. There is absolutely no need to search out each and every category possible for a new article, such as in the case of Barack Obama which has 45 categiries. Many of these categories are added by people who enjoy categorisation, are refining the category tree, cleaning up categories or have special interests. However, each new article should have at least one category, if not two or three, when newly created.
It is fairly obvious to allot categories such as "Rabbits and hares", "Herbivorous animals" and "Meat" to Rabbit as it is a member of that zoological grouping, eats vegetable matter and is often eaten itself, all of which are matters of common knowledge.
However, many categories such as "Populated places established in 1726" in the case of Montevideo and "United Church of Christ members" as well as so many others in the case of Barack Obama are neither easily recognised or found in the category tree. These develop over time as the article is developed and improved, categorisation enthusiasts and people having deep knowledge of the article subject etc further categorise the article.
A series of techniques may be used to select appropriate categories for an article.

One way is to use the the top level categories of interest to readers. These are Category:Articles and Category:Contents, as all articles can be found from these.

Often the article title or the subject with which the article is concerned can help you us choose a category. Often this will be a starting point. Allot this category to the article and then click on it to search for a more appropriate category.

Search for a sister article and see what categories it has. Some categories are automatically added, such as when a stub template is added to a new article. Similarly, adding WikiProject banner templates to talk pages of articles adds categories to the talk pages which help the WikiProject organise articles under their jurisdiction.
