The battle honour of Carnatic was given to units of the British Army and of the armies of the East India Company (later the British Indian Army) which had distinguished themselves during the Anglo-Mysore Wars. The battle honour is unusual in that it covered two separate campaigns - the Second Anglo-Mysore War of 1780-84 during which Hyder Ali threatened Madras itself, and the Third Anglo-Mysore War of 1790-92 up to the invasion of Mysore. The award of the battle honour, likewise, was unusual in being in two instalments far apart in time. Three battalions of the Bengal Native Infantry were awarded the honour vide Gazette of the Governor General (GOGG) number 43 of 1829 and the battle honour lapsed after the Mutiny. It was much later awarded to twenty native units of the Madras Army vide Gazette of India No 378 of 1889. Today, the battle honour is considered as repugnant.
