In 1984, however, biochemists John H. Wotiz of the University of Illinois and Susanna Rudofsky of the University of Chicago wanted to investigate why Kekulé had been silent for 25 years about his research method. Having received permission from Klaus Hafner, director of the Kekulé archives at the University of Darmstadt, the two biochemists found a letter written in 1854 to a German publisher, in which the scientist proposed the translation and publication of an essay by the French chemist Auguste Laurent. In addition, they found a publication from 1858 in which Kekulé again quoted Laurent's essay, and in particular page 408: the essay would no longer be quoted in any way by the German scientist. Wotiz and Rudofsky searched for Laurent's essay, found it, and on page 408 discovered that the French chemist proposed a hexagonal structure formula for benzoyl chloride. So, when Kekulé made the formula public in 1866, he had actually already known it for 12 years. This does not detract from the greatness of the German scientist, but it certainly makes the story of the "Kekulé snake" only an edifying legend.
