South Africa just got its new constitution Cabaret takes place from 1929-1930, a time when Berlin, in the middle of a post-World War I economic depression, is going from a center of underground, cultural atmosphere to the start of Hitler’s dictatorship the rise of the Nazi Party. Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next book. On his first night in Berlin, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a nightclub overseen by the strange, gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, “the Emcee.” Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a talented cabaret performer, and a lost soul. Sally and Cliff begin a relationship, which turns into a dream-like romance. As time passes, however, the situation in Berlin changes from exciting and scary and violent; Ernst, Cliff’s first German friend, turns out to be an up-and-coming member of the Nazi Party, and Herr Schultz, a boarder at Fraulein Schneider’s guest house (and Schneider’s fiancee), is the victim of an Anti-Semitic hate crime. The main characters were Emcee is the male lead, Sally Bowles is the female lead, Clifford Bradshaw is a male lead, Fraulein Schneider is a male lead, Herr Schultz is was supporting male.
In 1972 a film version of the play was released. The main characters were Lizza Minelli and Michael York.
