Constructivism- philosophy of learning that states that people build new knowledge based on experiences and prior knowledge. In this theory emphasis is put on the student rather than the educator. The concept originated in eighteenth century when philosopher Giambattista Vico published the idea that people can only gain an understanding from constructing knowledge themselves. Constructivism has been used by many educators and behaviorists, but is generally attributed to Jean Piaget. In Piaget's Stages of Development he provided scientific evidence that knowledge is constructed from birth to adolescence. Educators practice cooperative learning in the classroom by allowing students to be creative and explore the world around them.
