History

The structure that was still standing after the 911 Attack on the World Trade Center in New York City was demolished months after Whitaker took the photography. The photography called 'Steel Standing' is on display at various institutions around the world. It is on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., National September 11 Memorial & Museum, The New York State Museum, The United Nations, United States Department of Defense Pentagon, United States Library of Congress, and the New-York Historical Society Library & Museum.[8] [9] Whitaker says that when he saw the 207 foot tall ruin of steel that was still standing that it gave him the the title "Steel Standing", and that he was inspired. He is quoted as “An inspirational message of courage, strength, resilience and rebirth but always, a feeling of hope."

Quotes

“When I saw it, it hit me immediately. In my mind it captured the whole event – the jagged edge, the shape, the style, the look of it all". Anthony Whitaker

“What I saw was this remnant but the way it was standing symbolically communicated strength and character. And somewhere in there you could see victory, good overpowering evil. Of course, you see the damage but at the same time it was also beauty in the form of a ruin”. Anthony Whitaker
