Hello there! This is my ongoing translation of parts of cs:Královecký kraj, which I plan to use to expand Královec Region with. It's still not finished, I will insert it into the article once it's done.

Real basis

The satire is based on the fact that the city of Kaliningrad was named Königsberg (German for "King's Hill", Czech: Královec, from král, "king") at its founding, in honor of King Ottokar II of Bohemia, who attended the first crusade into the region. The predominantly German crusaders did so out of pride of accompanying such an important person as the King, who was moreover a respected person in Germany, as his mother belonged to the prominent Hohenstaufen noble family.[1]

The Czech newspaper Deník N, in its podcast Studio N, tried to consider the satire seriously, with host Filip Titlbach interviewing the paper's science editor Petr Koubský about whether the joke has any real justification. During the interview, it was stated that Czechia does not have any right, historic or otherwise, to Kaliningrad Oblast, unless it falls to such pseudohistorical constructions that are employed by Russia. Even then, it would not be given any authority to conquer and annex any foreign territory with respect to international law. Moreover, the Czech Army is not built for occupying widespread territory. In any case, even if this scenario were possible, by annexing Kaliningrad Oblast, Czechia would only create enormous problems for itself, which include widespread environmental contamination due to industrial production. Petr Koubský said that he would definitely not want to carri out this scenario. The Základní myšlenka satiry mu přijde vtipná a vidí v ní snahu českého národa vypořádat se s půl roku trvající nepříjemnou, napjatou, znervózňující mezinárodní situací na Ukrajině. Metodu uvolňování napětí přes humor považuje za psychologicky správnou.[1]

Creation and development

Before the meme started spreading, on September 27, 2022, an Internet petition calling for a referendum with a result of 98% for and an annexation of the region was created by the Czech satirical website AZ247.cz. This petition was noticed by Polish media.[2][3] By October 4, the petiton had over six thousand signatures, which rose to 16 thousand on October 5. As of October 10, the petition has over 19 thousand signatures.[3]

One day later, an anonymous Polish Twitter user nicknamed papież internetu (Pope of the Internet) posted a map dividing Kaliningrad Oblast into two parts, with the southern part belonging to Poland and the nortern part to Czechia, writing "Time to divide Kaliningrad so our Czech brothers finally have sea access."[4] The meme spread to Czech circles after being reposted by Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský[5], after which the Russian website EurAsia Daily wrote about it as if it were a serious proposal. These tweets started the mass posting of various memes and jokes about the topic, usually with the hashtags KralovecCzechia, KaliningradIsCzechia or MakeKaliningradCzechAgain. A Polish meme, for example, featured Russian President Vladimir Putin asking "What is the situation in Kaliningrad?" and later adding, surprisedly, "What do you mean, 'ahoj'?" (the Czech word for "hello"). Další polské memy v souvislosti s obsazováním oblasti psaly o ponorce Helena Vondráčková, o ponorce Jožin z bažin nebo o letadlové lodi Karel Gott, další mem byl o tom, jak „české vojenské námořnictvo z jaderné ponorky Loupežník Rumcajs poblíž Kaliningradu zabraného Českem pokusně vystřelilo balistickou raketu Maková panenka“.[6] Dalšími navrhovanými názvy českých námořních plavidel byly Krteček, Štaflík či Špagetka. Na recesi zareagovala i ambasáda USA, která odpověděla na tweet českého ministerstva obrany, že od USA nezávazně poptává letouny. Ve své odpovědi napsala „Nepotřebovali byste také náhodou letadlovou loď?“[7]

Na českém internetu memy například ukazovaly novou předpověď počasí, kde byla kromě mapy Česka zobrazena i mapa nové exklávy, nebo historický důkaz, kdy americký prezident J. F. Kennedy v roce 1963 při návštěvě Kaliningradu potvrdil české nároky a prohlásil „Ich bin ein Kralovečák.“ Další memy ukazovaly české tramvaje nebo Pendolino v Kaliningradu nebo přeplněné kaliningradské pláže s českými turisty a prázdné Chorvatsko. Na Twitteru se objevil také nový „oficiální“ účet exklávy @KralovecCzechia.[7] a "oficiální" facebooková stránka "Královec". Na internetu kolovala mapa Královeckého kraje s českými názvy měst, kromě Královce například Benešov nad Baltem (původně Baltijsk), Světlá Hora (Svetlogorsk) nebo Zelenského-gradsk (Zelenogradsk) jako pocta ukrajinskému prezidentovi. Mnoho memů vyobrazovalo obyvatele Královeckého kraje jako postavičky z pohádkového cyklu O krtkovi.[8]

Jeden z mnoha dalších memů ukazoval mapu České republiky, rozšířenou o Kaliningrad, Slovensko a Podkarpatskou Rus (hranice ČSR), Horní Slezsko a pět „separatistických republik“ podél hranic Polska, které „náhodou“ tvořily pozemní koridor ke Kaliningradu se zprávou, že se jedná o pravděpodobný budoucí plán obnovy Českého impéria[9]. Mem tak reaguje na události Rusko-Ukrajinské války od roku 2014, ospravedlňování Ruského imperialismu (vládou Ruska) "historií" nebo zfalšovaná referenda Ukrajinských regionů („náhodou“ tvořících pozemní koridor ke Krymu) v září 2022.

Reactions

Besides a few Czech politicians,[8] the United States Embassy in Prague also got involved in the satire by replying to a tweet by the Czech defense ministry about a non-binding request for attack airplanes with "Don't you need an aircraft carrier as well?"[7]

Naproti tomu ruský web EurAsia Daily vzal recesi vážně: „Člen Evropského parlamentu z České republiky Tomáš Zdechovský učinil revanšistickou poznámku o ruské Kaliningradské oblasti. Mysle si, že je politicky důležitý, Zdechovský uvedl, že coby vzdor k referendům uspořádaným v Novorusku podporuje pochybnou myšlenku od jistého polského internetového uživatele uspořádat referendum v Kaliningradské oblasti a rozdělení ruského regionu mezi Česko a Polsko.“[8]

Polská a česká média informovala o recesi s nadhledem, ukrajinská média ji ocenila jako povedený žert.[8]

Do reakcí se zapojily i některé oficiální účty, například marketingové značky jako twitterový profil Českých drah, České pošty, Zásilkovny.cz, Pražské integrované dopravy nebo Alza.cz.[10]

6. října 2022 vyšla na webu Bloombergu zpráva o této satirické události.[11]
