Template talk:NRISref

Template-protected edit request on 27 May 2024

Please remove this text:

|#default = Warning: Template:NRISref used with invalid value for
{{red|1=version=}}
parameter ([[Template:NRISref#Parameters|help]]).{{main other|[[Category:NRISref errors]]}}

The template is out of date and only accepts specific values. The database version should not be required. I'm not sure where at https://npgallery.nps.gov/ I can even find other version dates. Reywas92Talk 18:15, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done I removed the whole switch block because it's only there to check if you entered something that isn't the database version. It seems like the NPS used to publish database downloads every once in a while, but since the 2010s they changed to a searchable database that is continuously updated. Unknown parameters

@Jonesey95 there's some drift between the documented parameters and what's actually in the template. Mackensen (talk) 19:13, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The documentation is not protected. You are welcome to fix it. If that is not a fitting response to your sentence above, please explain further what you are hoping that I or someone else will do. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:06, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll look into it, but people shouldn't resolve errors that aren't actually errors. Presumably the tracking category was added with that goal. Mackensen (talk) 01:16, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ignore me, I was looking at Bowery and didn't understand what I was looking at. It's fine. Mackensen (talk) 01:19, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I make mistakes all the time, and I'm happy to correct them when they are explained to me. If you see anything amiss here, just let me know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:29, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cite issues

So I've been looking into the NRIS/NRHP lately, and I think we could make improvements. The current template links to the overall NRIS database record, which acts as a container for the nomination form, photos, and any other related files. It's the best choice when you're simply stating that a property is listed on the National Register. However, sometimes you want to link to a specific, authored primary source document. It's the best choice when the information you're using comes directly from the text written (or photo) by that author in that form. For example the nomination form. This is a very common scenario.

Example citing a Nomination Form:

Gilbert, Kathleen (1980). National Register of Historic Places Inventory—Nomination Form for Bankard-Gunther Mansion (Report). Baltimore, Maryland: CHAP / HCRS. NRHP 80001781, MD B-3600 – via National Park Service.

Compare with the NRISref version:

"National Register Information System – Bankard-Gunther Mansion (#80001781)". National Register of Historic Places. National Park Service. July 9, 2010.

Again, this refers to the NRIS database record which contains multiple source documents.

Another issue is the template displays "#80001781". I've done some research on this, and believe the better/correct method is "NRHP 80001781". The formal full name would be "National Register of Historic Places reference number 80001781" and the most common abbreviation is "NRHP reference number 80001781".

We have 10s of thousands of citations directly to the nomination form, usually cite web. I think this can be improved somehow. In addition there is state level: [1] and [2]

Edit request to add 2024 points, 2025 database

I'd like two versions added to NRISref:

I'm not sure if the download site really makes a difference, or if we just want to list the date and call it good. I'm making this edit request because I've loaded these databases into my Web site and I expect to update the infobox generator to include these new data sources. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 05:28, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
