386 on 98SE
Not sure whether if its of importance in this article however it seems that 386 support was removed in 98 SE

A 286 could run on Windows 95, and a 386 could run on Windows 98. The problem is the speed of the CPU was too slow for the O/S to be functional for an average user. I had a friend who bought a Desktop with a Pentium running at 200 Mhz., it came with Windows 95. He decided to upgrade it to Windows 98SE. The Windows 98SE was too slow running on the Pentium 200 Mhz for his liking, so he took 98SE off and put Windows 95 back on.
I also saw a friend running Windows 95 on a 286 CPU.
The top speed of the 386 was only 33Mhz, or 40Mhz if you went the AMD route. These are more like very low-end guidelines, not rigid rules.
