Black Wallachia
Both names could come from a confusion : Kara Iflak, the Turkish name of Vallachia, means ”land of Vallachians” ; but later kara ”land” was mistranslated as kara - black. Later, the Turks renamed Moldavia and Vallachia as Kara-Iflak (Moldavia) and Ak Iflak (Vallachia) according to the Turkish cardinal points symbolism : north is symbolized by black, and west is symbolized by white.
This "color assignment" comes in direct contradiction with 3rd footnote in (in Romanian) Description of Moldavia by Dimitrie Cantemir.
P.S.: I dropped the idea of citing properly a wikisource resource in another language (if it can be done at all) as it was a real pain for someone who's trying to do it for the first time.
Question
why does the history subarticle of this page begin with ancient history, mentions of Dacians, Romans, Byzantines, various migratory peoples ect. when the history of the principality begins when it was first founded in either the late 13th or early 14th century? I think it would be reasonable if the history began in 1246, which is when Wallachia was first mentioned in a charter. Is the page taking into account the political entity (The Principality of Wallachia) or the actual land itself (commonly referred to as Muntenia & Oltenia in Romanian today)? it's a bit confusing SpandauSteaua (talk) 15:36, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- “Wallachia or Walachia is a historical and geographical region of modern-day Romania.(…) Wallachia was traditionally divided into two sections, Muntenia(Greater Wallachia) and Oltenia (Lesser Wallachia).(…)”
- -as it says in the first paragraph- we are talking about the region, while the polity is mentioned underneath. Maxwiki222 (talk) 18:01, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- wallachia was mentinoned ong before that and the page is only taking the political entity also the land wasnt called wallachia bc thats what they decided to call it they called it wallachia bc of the word walh (wich mean latin speaking foreigner) from germanic wich later was adopted by greeks and the slavonic church to describe the latin speaking population thats why if you look on a historical map you will see a region in modern day greece also called wallachia ~2026-14485-75 (talk) 22:12, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
Local army
"the local army, however, soon disappeared due to the increased costs and the much more obvious efficiency of mercenary troops."
That's not true. It's true that the wallachian state relied more on hajduk mercenaries and other type of armies, but the local army didnt dissapear. CarpathianEnjoyer (talk) 23:39, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
