Location
Would it be a bit more precise to say that the Torres Strait is situated between Australia's Cape York and the opposing bank on the New Guinea side? i.e. that narrow gap in between. It seems that the Arafura Sea lies between the two land masses, as well. A-giau 13:49, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
And also - why is it necessary to highlight that Papua New Guinea is an independent state, and not necessary to say the same about Australia? Roidhrigh 12/12/2008
Name
excuse me but the man was born in Portugal, which makes him Portuguese. Torres is a Portuguese surname, Torrez is Spanish. He can't be both at the same time. Portugal and Spain were under the same crown in 1607, but were two different administrative territories. Therefore this man is PORTUGUESE.
- Who told you that Torres isn't Spanish, in fact it is the first time that I see it with that weird "z" at the end. Energyfreezer (talk) 02:01, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Why hasn't someone just fliped the image upside down? Is there a reason for keeping north at the bottom? 8472 08:26, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- That was how the satelite took the picture, of course! 23 July 2006.
Navigating the Strait?
The article merely says the Strait is shallow -- but it doesn't say how shallow. What is the maximum draft that can safely traverse the strait?
Does the shallow depth mean there are tidal races?
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 03:52, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
While I don't know the maximum depth of Torres Strait, the main channels are deep enough for the largest of oil tankers and the like. And - the are some pretty strong tidal races, though not of the strength of the famous ones in the Scottish islands. Rennell Island picture deleted - not part of Torres Strait. roidhrigh 5/2/2011
Climate Change
I was surprised to see nothing in this article about climate change impacts on the Torres Strait islands, after reading this today: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-07-12/torres-strait-pleads-for-climate-change-action/2791376 Just a suggestion for any who have time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.67.225.15 (talk) 15:19, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
- I started a Climate Change section on Torres Strait Islands last week. - Shiftchange (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
