Proposal to use Tehran Geophysics Station as the primary climate reference for Tehran

Dear Wikipedia editors,

I would like to respectfully propose reconsidering the use of Mehrabad Airport as the primary meteorological station for representing Tehran’s climate in Wikipedia articles, and suggest that the Tehran Geophysics (University of Tehran) station be used instead as the main reference.

Reasoning

Tehran has a strong north–south elevation gradient (approximately 1,100 m to over 1,700 m), which results in significant intra-urban temperature differences. The choice of station therefore has a substantial impact on reported annual means and Köppen climate classification.

Mehrabad Airport is located in south-western Tehran, at a lower elevation, and is heavily influenced by:

Urban heat island effects Open tarmac surfaces Proximity to industrial and transportation infrastructure

Tehran Geophysics Station, operated by the University of Tehran, is:

Located closer to the urban core Less affected by airport-specific heat biases More representative of central Tehran, where a large portion of the population resides

Long-term climatological data indicate that:

Mehrabad’s annual mean temperature is approximately 18.3–18.6 °C Geophysics Station reports a lower and more representative mean of approximately 17.0–17.4 °C Northern Tehran stations average even cooler values (~15–16 °C)

Using Mehrabad as the sole reference tends to overstate Tehran’s warmth, which can influence Köppen classification (e.g., pushing Tehran toward BSk) and may not accurately reflect the city as a whole.

Precedent and consistency

In many large cities worldwide, Wikipedia prioritizes central urban or climatological stations over peripheral airports when those airports are known to introduce systematic bias. Given Tehran’s topography and urban structure, the Geophysics Station aligns better with this practice.

Suggested approach

Use Tehran Geophysics Station as the primary station for climate summaries and classifications Retain Mehrabad Airport data as a secondary reference, clearly labeled as an airport station Optionally note intra-city variation (north vs south Tehran) in the climate section

This change would improve scientific accuracy, representativeness, and climatological consistency without removing existing data.

Thank you for considering this proposal.

I rewrote parts of the climate section. It was a mess either way. Uness232 (talk) 10:51, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Looks much more realistic now. Because before that everyone relies on Mehrabad airport which is not really where the average of Tehran is. Shemiran is much colder than average and Mehrabad just too hot for the average. Geophysics station is the representation of Tehran and whole. The population of Tehran metroplian area

The population of the Tehran metropolis is not 15 million, it is 18 million people. The Tehran metropolis includes Tehran province and Alborz (Karaj) province, and together these two province have a population of 18 million people. 14.5 million in Tehran province as well as 3.5 million people in Alborz province. I think this error is due to many people do not know the exact definition of Tehran metropolis, many believe that it includes just Tehran province, but the fact is that it includes Alborz province as well.--Yasujih (talk) 14:24, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No. Sorry but Tehran and Karan are now located in different provinces even though they are almost attached ~2025-43481-29 (talk) 08:36, 30 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Environnemental Issues is garbled

The first sentence is a mess, looks like a chunk has been deleted and it runs into the next one. I'm on y phone do I can't investigate and fix myself! ~2026-21756-4 (talk) 10:08, 11 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox too long

The infobox for this article far exceeds the recommended length, due in part to the number of photos and the choice to have captions for each of them rather than combined at the bottom. Could we narrow down the selection, and consider whether any other elements can be condensed/removed? Sdkbtalk 16:05, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Agree as outlined at WP:INFOBOXTOOLARGE- most city articles have this problem...look at the example the project uses Guideline (essay) Moxy🍁 16:32, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
