If I remember correctly (I was there in the amazed audience) Sam Chatmon's 1970's Toronto appearance was not the Mariposa festival, but at Tim Harrison's short-lived "Toronto Folk Festival" held down near the yacht club at the foot of Bathurst Street. The year couldn't have been '74 since I didn't arrive in Toronto until fall of '75; I can't say for sure, but I think it was the summer of 1976 and the lineup also included Elizabeth Cotton.
Sam Chatmon was astounding. He looked 80 and maybe 80lbs, and had to be assisted to the stage by a sweet young thing holding his arm and carrying his guitar. She seated him centre stage on a plain banquet chair, and with all the strength in his skinny frail arms he hoisted that stainless steel national guitar to his lap and started to play.
for 45 minutes the stage was a blaze of fury in sound, Sam rocking back and forth on the back legs of the chair, stomping his two feet, wailin' that mississippi blues.
when Sam finished, the guitar slid down to the stage beside him, the sweet young thing came out and escorted him back to the stageside, the crowd frantic in applause, and not any tribute applause, but sheer and utter blown out of their soaking socks sort of applause.
One old old man. One chair. One guitar. I knew right then and there that what that man did for a living was pure voodoo magic.
Fair use rationale for Image:Sam Chatmon.jpg

Image:Sam Chatmon.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
