Talk:Obturator

Headnote?

Some form of explanatory headnote would help here - because the range of meanings is confusing and puzzling. I would edit as necessary; but I would be well out of my comfort zone attempting this on a DAB-page. So I'm leaving it for someone else more familiar with the layout structures and usages.

Essentially the puzzle is this: obturator is a (modern) Latin word meaning "stopper",[1] or "blocker", yet many of the medical / anatomical meanings seem to be about pipes and gaps. Thus obturator veins and arteries, canals, etc; notably, the obturator foramen! ("blocker window"??)

At the extreme, an obturator (the word used on its own) is the essential element of a trocar, a hole-making instrument: it's the part tht makes the hole.

The explanation, for most of these terms, lies with the obturator membrane, a "thin fibrous sheet, which almost completely closes the obturator foramen". (The trocar´s obturator operates snug within a cannula, and so functions, when it has made its hole, to prevent leaks / spurts.)

This DAB would be a good place to provide this explanation, (1) rather than duplicated in full at many places (though brief footnotes might be good) - (2) because here is where the various terms appear together for reference. 2.101.210.198 (talk) 00:40, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
