Talk:Normal route

Should merge this into Climbing route or Glossary of climbing terms

Don't really think this is a standalone article (there isn't a lot of RS on "normal route" as a topic or concept). Most discussion is just the definition/term? I would merge this into Climbing route or redirect to Glossary of climbing terms, as I don't see this article developing, and I don't think there is real "content" here (feels more like padding). There may be merit in merging this into other articles, but I've reverted your initial merge because a) This is also a general hiking term not just a climbing term, b) there is information in the article that should be retained e.g. the different types of route, c) the merge process was not followed and d) not enough time was given to enable a discussion. The problem is "normal route" is an alpine climbing route term (e.g. lots of "voie normale" in the Alps). Not really a general hiking term as they are all relatively easy (whereas alpine climbing routes vary from doable, to deadly, and hence the even current use of voie normale - and climbers would ask which is the voie normale). The other stuff about routes is not really part of "normal route" and should be taken out (and it is really various dictionary translations of hiking trail - so maybe there. There really is no chance of this being a standalone article, and there is minimal content worth preserving (what was there is not in climbing route). I taken out the unreferenced (and inaccurate/speculative) text and tightened the references. Per above, "voie normale" is a climbing term and I think the lede should be merged into climbing route as it mostly is. The list of routes that pertain to mountains have already been added to climbing route (and a See also to alpine route), outside of updating the hiking trail article for its names, that would be it for a merge. I have merged the "trail" terms into the relevant alpine route and trail articles; per above, "voie normale" is an alpine climbing/mountainering term (not a general hiking term, as all the routes are easy). Regard Voie normale (alpinisme) [fr]. Hope that helps. Aszx5000 (talk) 21:25, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
