Completed changes, addressing Alan Kay's comments
I've made some attribution corrections and added some more details regarding:
- Bert (William R.) Sutherland's MIT thesis (1965?) "Online Graphical Specification of Procedures"

Intent to correct article, with respect to comments from Alan Kay
Alan Kay, thanks for the comments. I just wanted to mention that I intend to make changes to this article in about 1-2 weeks time to address your comments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nodegraph (talk • contribs) 23:05, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
Comments from Alan Kay
As I understand this article, neither Ivan Sutherland nor I should be given credit for this form (or graphical look) of programming. But do take a peek at Ivan's brother Bert (William R.) Sutherland's MIT thesis (1965?) "Online Graphical Specification of Procedures". This was one of the first systems I know of that is like what is described in this article. I have given a number of demos of the GRAIL system -- a pen-based-display-based programming system -- but I did this in admiration and so that other computer people could be aware of it. I had nothing to do with inventing or creating this system.
The underlying representation of Ivan's Sketchpad system did use structures that contained pointers to other nodes, data, and procedures, and the larger use of them was arguably the first use of "objects" in a software system. Some of the ideas for these "nodes" came from Doug Ross' "Plex" structures (at MIT, etc.). Quite a bit of the interesting ideas of Sketchpad originated with Ivan.
Simula I structures were made from instances of Algol blocks, and this was thought through in a large scale and ingenious fashion by Nygaard and Dahl. I was inspired by both Sketchpad and Simula to do an object-oriented desktop computer and software system with Ed Cheadle (called "The Flex Machine").

New content added
Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I've made some changes to this page to address the multiple issues tagged at the top of this page.
- I verified that all links are working by clicking through all of them.
- I believe that it now meets Wikipedia's quality standards, as I added more in-depth information on the history of node graphs, its evolution, and current-day use in graphics and machine learning.
- I also added some inline citations.
Thanks for taking the time to review my changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nodegraph (talk • contribs) 15:51, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
External links modified
Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to 3 external links on Node graph architecture. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:
- Added archive https://web.archive.org/20060215201421/http://www.appleinsider.com:80/images/shake351.gif to http://www.appleinsider.com/images/shake351.gif
