Sentimental as an alternate for Normal

"Normal" was actually the first song written for FoaBP, however it's didn't fit, and it was reworked into "Sentimental."

YouTube Interview : Starting at 7:00 minute marker.

I attempt to transcript the section of the interview.

Your other question about the "Normal"/"Sentimental" thing. The fact there are two songs that use the same chorus. "Normal" actually came first. And was written ... well it was first first song I wrote for the Blank Planet album. And it's quite long and complicated, well not massively complicated, it moves through various different sections. And when the rest of the album came together, there were a lot of songs like that, around the 7,8 minute mark. And because Normal had quite a strong chorus, I actually felt what would work better would be to take that chorus and build a must simpler, stronger, I suppose more direct song around it and that would fit better with the context of the record because it would be something a little different.

So "'Normal' was composed entirely by Steven Wilson as an alternate version to 'Sentimental', the last one was finally picked for the album." would not be correct. "Sentimental" would be the alternate, if you want to use that comparison between the songs 208.78.5.146 (talk) 16:52, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sentimental, Normal and Lunar Park

The main article for Fear of a Blank Planet states that the album is based on Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis. The lyrics of Normal suggest that they are from the perspective of from the perspective of Ellis, whereas Sentimental and the remainder of Fear of a Blank Planet are told from the perspective of Robby. This can be noted in the removal of the word "they" from the chorus lines of Sentimental; demonstrating a shift from an adult author to a child.

Writing and recording

the last section makes no sense; the mentioned bridging song IS on the album.

The band wrote "Way Out of Here" to bridge "Sentimental" and "Sleep Together"; after Fear of a Blank Planet was released, the four remaining tracks were mixed between June and August 2007 to make the Nil Recurring EP.
