A fact from NW Natural appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 4 October 2007. The text of the entry was as follows: Did you know... that NW Natural in Portland, Oregon was the first gas company in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States when it started in 1859? "The charter was given approximately a month before the Oregon State Constitution was signed, which would not have allowed a perpetual franchise." I'm having some problems with that sentence. The state constitution was signed in 1857 by the delegates to the Oregon Constitutional Convention, then ratified later that year by the citizens of Oregon. Congress later approved of it when it enacted legislation to grant statehood in February 1859. So, if the company was founded in 1859, then it should be something like: "The charter was granted approximately a month before the Oregon Constitution became effective upon statehood, which the Constitution would not have allowed a perpetual franchise." You're right AM, and now that you quote it, it sounds awkward (was the charter for a month? or it was given a month prior to the signing?).
