RE. "renamed to the Mathematical Association in 1894" - conflicting sources
Two citations were given in this page for this fact.
- Learning Mathematics: Issues, Theory and Classroom Practice (3rd. ed.) by Anthony Orton (2004) says "This concern led to the formation of the Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching in 1871 (later renamed the Mathematical Association)" without mentioning the year for this change, so does not support 1894.
- A chapter in Mathematics in Victorian Britain (A voice for mathematics by Sloan Evans Despeaux) says "In 1894, to reflect the Association's widened interests in mathematics and pedagogy, the AIGT renamed itself the Mathematical Association".
However, Mathematics for the Multitude?: A History of the Mathematical Association by Michael H. Price gives the date as "Finally, and appropriately, the AIGT changed its name in 1897 to the Mathematical Association". Price claims to be working with access to primary documents, while Despeaux does not give a citation. The name Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching still appears in the Association's journal The Mathematical Gazette in the period 1894-1897, for example the last page of The Mathematical Gazette No. 6 (Oct 1895) includes a listing of the "Council of Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching" which is after Despeaux claims the name has changed but before Price claims the change has happened. Another chapter in Mathematics in Victorian Britain (Geometry: The Euclid debate by Amirouche Moktefi) supports 1897: "In March 1897, the Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching changed its name and became the Mathematical Association" (p. 333). Because of the discrepancy, in changing the date I have included a selection of the many other sources that support 1897. Maths11 (talk) 10:49, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
