Talk:Mark Sykes

names of provinces

The article currently says "It was Sykes and his fellows in this group who revived ancient Greek and Roman names for Middle Eastern regions. Such terms in common use today include "Syria", "Palestine", "Iraq" and "Mesopotamia"." But the use of "Syria", "Palestine" and "Mesopotamia" was traditional and common, not revived, and "Iraq" was not a Greek or Roman name. If this remark cannot be substantiated I shall remove it. Meeting Kitchener

This article contradicts itself - saying "Sykes only saw Kitchener briefly once in his life at York House, on which occasion he was presented with a list of points for discussion" but later having Sykes attend the War Committee where Kitchener spoke. Wife

"He married Edith Gorst, also a Roman Catholic, daughter of the Conservative party manager, Eldon Gorst"

According to the article about Eldon Gorst, Edith is his sister:

"Eldon Gorst was also the lover for two years in the 1880s of (Christina Anne) Jessica Sykes, née Cavendish-Bentinck, whose son Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Bt., later married 1903 Eldon's younger sister Edith."

It's likely that the internal link is wrong and Eldon's father John Eldon Gorst is implied here since Eldon Jr wasn't a politician. --INS Pirat (talk) 22:55, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Sykes designed Arab flags.

Many of the flags used by Arab countries today date back, in part, to designs created by Mark Sykes - why is there nothing on this in the article? 2A02:C7C:E15E:F000:E59A:CB61:1657:70A6 (talk) 11:35, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
