technology?
it would be interesting to know what technology is used in a project like this, i.e. I guess it is not Ethernet. any details? --77.118.253.139 (talk) 23:29, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- Mm, not sure if there's anything too special about it?
- "The cable, which is about 1.5 times the diameter of a garden hose, contains eight pairs of fiber optic cables encircled by copper, a hard-plastic protective layer and a waterproof coating." [1] PvOberstein (talk) 01:40, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
Bandwidth breakdown calculation
From the article:
> The cable was initially expected to have a transmission speed of 160 terabits per second. (Specifically, 8 fiber pairs * 25 DWDM channels * 400 Gbit/s per single carrier (16-QAM modulation) = 160 Tbit/s).
By my reckoning, 8 * 25 * 400Gbit = 80,000Gbit = 80 terabits. Where's the other factor of 2 coming from? Does a DWDM channel carry 2 carriers? It's not clear from the context and the cited source is behind a paywall; the speed of 160 Tbit/s is widely quoted in articles about MAREA but I'm wondering what's missing from the bandwidth calculation breakdown here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dylanbeattie (talk • contribs) 16:42, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
