Birth name
The New Biographical Dictionary of Film says this about his birth name: "Vladimir Palanuik—proceed with caution, since there are a handful of versions of his true name". This BBC News article, which is cited, also says Vladimir Palahnuik, but this is not reflected in the article. Why is this? There is also this that is cited, where it says "Volodymyr Palahniuk", but this was translated from Ukrainian, so of course "Vladimir" will end up as "Volodymyr" in a Ukrainian-language article. Since he was born in the U.S., is there any RS to support the current birth name? Mellk (talk) 11:19, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- His parents were both from Western Ukraine, the AustroHungarian territories, so there is no reason for the Russian spelling whatsoever.--Aristophile (talk) 22:53, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- I am not disputing his Ukrainian background, but it seems a bit odd that other sources refer to his birth name as "Vladimir Pala(h)nuik", while this article says he was born Volodymyr Palahniuk. Note that there is no "h" in Russian and the suffix is not "-iuk" or "-yuk" but "-uik". Since he was born in the U.S., I do not think this is a translation issue (from Russian/Ukrainian). - Just avoid them odd sources, lest run into trouble.--Aristophile (talk) 13:26, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think you're qualified to lecture others about "odd sources". Special:Diff/1304676956. — Chrisahn (talk) 13:48, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Lute88 (whose confusing signature says "Aristophile"), you are obviously unqualified to distinguish "odd" from reliable sources. Please stop. You just inserted another unreliable source into the article, and I had to revert it.
- The source you inserted is a page on goldenglobes.com. According to archive.org, the first version of that page that contained any info beyond the name "Jack Palance" appeared between June and September 2023. (The text sometimes seems to disappear in that archived version, but it's visible in the next version.)
- Let's compare that text to this 22 June 2023 version of the Wikipedia article:
- Wikipedia: "One of six children, the young Volodymyr Palahniuk worked in coal mines during his youth before becoming a professional boxer in the late 1930s. Boxing under the name Jack Brazzo ..."
- goldenglobes.com: "One of six children, the young Palance worked in coal mines before becoming a professional boxer in the late 1930s under the name Jack Brazzo."
- Wikipedia: "In an episode of What's My Line?, he described how no one could pronounce his last name, and how it was suggested that he be called Palanski. From that he decided just to use Palance instead."
- goldenglobes.com: "In an episode of the panel game show What’s My Line?, he recalled how no one could pronounce his last name and how it was suggested that he be called Palanski. He decided to use Palance instead."
- Wikipedia: "His acting break came as Marlon Brando's understudy in A Streetcar Named Desire, and he eventually replaced Brando on stage as Stanley Kowalski."
- goldenglobes.com: "Palance got his Broadway acting break as an understudy of Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and eventually replaced Brando on stage as Stanley Kowalski."
- The text was obviously copied from Wikipedia, and so was the alleged birth name, very likely. Another case of Citogenesis.
- If you think you found a reliable source for his birth name, please don't just add it to the article again, but discuss it here first. As you said above: "Just avoid them odd sources, lest you run into trouble."

Marriage numbers
How did he get married in 1967? His divorce was not final until 1968. Is that possible? ~2026-25928-74 (talk) 02:32, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
