Talk:IBM 3090

Models and features

IBM 3090#Models and features has a table of 12 models. I have a list of announcement letters at User:Chatul/References# Hardware timeline that covers 45 model. I was planning on expanding the table, but listing all of the models would make it quite bulky. I'd like some advice:

  1. Should I add all of the missing models?
  2. Should I add a column for maximum number of channels
  3. Should I add a column for maximum memory size?
  4. Should I make the table collapsible? --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 20:33, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sort order for Models and features

Should the table of models be sorted by date or by model number? Currently it is neither. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 16:27, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is an IBM 3084Q, which was the predecessor to the 3090. 129.41.87.7 (talk) 21:24, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it looked more like a 308x. No photo at all would be better than one of the wrong computer... --Vometia (talk) 11:37, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

found an ISA manual for the 3090

no haha just a sales sheet but it has prices! wow! Lkcl (talk) 13:32, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.chilton-computing.org.uk/ccd/mainframes/p009.htm ok it was the IBM 370 ISA which we know was true Cray-style Vectors. so the 3090 was a Cray-style Vector Processor. wow. Lkcl (talk) 13:34, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The are several[1][2][3] manuals for the ISA. There are a couple of others[a] for niche features.
I don't understand the reference to Cray-style; the 3090, Z and Cray vector instructions are all SIMD, differing in the number of vector registers and their widths. Contrast this with the CDC STAR 100, which was a true vector machine. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 15:41, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
