Tokyo Metro Ginza LineGinza lineGinza line – For Singapore MRT's lines, all of which have renamed from "xxx MRT line" to "xxx line" as the main article names. Does that case suitable for Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway series? Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 03:15, 1 December 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 04:34, 8 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 2 January 2026

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. After extended time for discussion, there is no consensus for the entire proposed move structure, but there is consensus to capitalize "Line" in each title. BD2412 T 03:40, 10 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

– Most of these are restorations of articles to their titles prior to the recent page moves. The format of "Tokyo Metro X Line" appears to be the WP:COMMONNAME for each line. Additionally, some other line articles were not moved, creating an issue in regards to WP:CONSISTENT. Each page move received minimal participation so there does not appear to be a strong consensus on the new titles. The editor who proposed the previous moves appeared to express uncertainty with his proposals, and was extrapolating a titling format used to refer to a different system internationally (the Singapore MRT), which does not apply to the Tokyo subway. Additionally, the restoration of the diacritic to the Tōzai Line article title similarly meets WP:COMMONNAME and brings it in line with the other Tokyo subway article titles per WP:CONSISTENT. Comment I don't have an opinion on this at the moment (other than those I opposed previously), but all the lines which were moved to the smallcase L in "line" should have the L moved to uppercase, per MOS:PROPERNAME and WP:CONSISTENT with other Japanese railway lines. S5A-0043🚎(Talk) 09:36, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Support moving them back to a consistent format. Per S5A-0043, we should at least uppercase the word "line" per MOS:PROPERNAME and to be WP:CONSISTENT with Japanese rail lines. – Epicgenius (talk) 18:01, 4 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the title name could be controversial for WP:COMMONNAME and WP:DISTINGUISH. Japanese Wikipedia has the guidelines for naming the railway lines (ja:Wikipedia:記事名の付け方/鉄道#日本の路線). For that case, the Tokyo Metro lines in enwiki is forced to be titled "Tokyo Metro xxxx Line". However, the English Wikipedia doesn't have the similar naming guidline like Japanese Wikipedia say. Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 04:48, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Also, for distinguishing, there's no second line named "Ginza", "Marunouchi", "Hibiya", "Hanzōmon", "Fukutoshin", "Chiyoda", "Asakusa", or "Ōedo". If these articles remamed back to "Tokyo Metro xxxx Line" or "Toei xxxx Line", it could be lengthy and redundant (named after the operator name). For evidence, "Midōsuji Line", "Tanimachi Line" (Osaka Metro). Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 08:50, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, these could be moved to Ginza Line, Marunouchi Line, etc. (or if disambiguation is necessary, Tōzai Line (Tokyo Metro)); the article titles for each of these are proper nouns and still should be capitalized. However, WP:CONSISTENT is being violated here, since we have a mixture of capitalizations and disambiguation customs here. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:24, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...I suggest remaining the present title like Wenhu line, Island line (MTR) (for WP:LOWERCASE). Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 09:41, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at other Japanese railway line article titles, I'm fine with compromising with Epicgenius' suggestion to at the very least excluding the operator name wherever it is unnecessary and using a WP:CONSISTENT disambiguation custom wherever it is. However, I oppose retaining the lowercase "line" in the article titles per S5A-0043. "Line" appears to be part of the proper name for each of these lines. WP:LOWERCASE does not apply to proper names; MOS:PROPERNAME does, which stipulates that "Line" should be capitalized here. OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 23:42, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  1. For Taipei Metro, "Wenhu line", etc.
  2. For Taiwan Railway, "Western Trunk line", etc.
  3. For Tokyo Metro, "Ginza Line", etc.
  4. For JR, "Yamanote Line", etc.
  5. For Beijing Subway, "Batong line", etc.
  6. For NYCS, "Flushing Line", etc.
  7. For London Underground, "Victoria line", etc.
  8. For MTR, "East Rail line", etc.
  9. For SMRT, "Thomson–East Coast Line", etc.
I think the title for subway(metro)/railway lines should be consensus for "xxx Line" or "xxx line" (controversial between WP:CONSISTENT, MOS:PROPERNAME, and WP:LOWERCASE). Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 12:58, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
WP:CONSISTENT applies to similar topic areas; i.e. lines within a certain transit system. So, consistency in naming applies to lines within the same transit system, not globally. Different systems worldwide depend on a case-by-case basis; some treat "Line" as part of the proper name, others don't. So, enwiki utilizing different capitalizations for "Line" vs. "line" across different systems worldwide is normal, not an inconsistency. Again, if "Line" is part of the proper name of a line, then MOS:PROPERNAME stipulates that "Line" should be capitalized. If not, then WP:NCCAPS stipulates that "line" should not be capitalized.
If you feel strongly about discussing the cases of other systems, you're free to on the appropriate talk pages, but it is beyond the scope of this discussion. OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 22:36, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
"Tokyo Metro Tōzai Line" aligns with WP:NATDAB (as does Tokyo Metro Namboku Line). XtraJovial (talkcontribs) 12:19, 10 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
and to add, "Tokyo Metro Yūrakuchō Line" XtraJovial (talkcontribs) 01:33, 14 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose as proposed. I'd like to see evidence for Tokyo Metro X Line being a common name. That feels like a Wikipedia-ism. Mackensen (talk) 12:02, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
[1] [2] [3] [4] all use "東京メトロ銀座線" (Tokyo Metro Ginza Line). AlphaBetaGamma (Talk/report any mistakes here) 13:47, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
WP:EN English-language sources trump Japanese sources when determining the name of an English article. I'd be surprised if there aren't enough English-language sources that we have to rely on non-English sources for these. Erynamrod (talk) 19:46, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nom. XtraJovial (talkcontribs) 22:01, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose addition of opperator name, but support capitalization of "Line". The majority of English-language sources I'm finding simply refer to the lines as "Ginza Line" for example, though some do introduce it as the "Tokyo Metro Ginza Line" or even "Tokyo Metro's Ginza Line" once then call it simply the Ginza Line after.[5][6][7][8][9] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erynamrod (talkcontribs) 12:02, 10 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nom, WP:CONSISTENT. Nyamo Kurosawa (talk) 20:07, 14 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Per Erynamrod, I'd like to rename the Tokyo Metro Lines series to "XXX Line" (excluding Namboku and Tozai). Although many comments would like to set the name of "Tokyo Metro XXX Line", in fact, there aren't any other lines with the same name (for Chiyoda, Ginza, etc.) Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 01:57, 17 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose "Tokyo Metro XYZ Line", Support "XYZ Line" (with L capitalized) - Most Wikipedia articles about train lines around the world don't have their operator mentioned (see OrdinaryScarlett's reply). So, instead of adding Tokyo Metro, make it just the line name with "Line" with an uppercase L to make it more consistent. All the lines inside Tokyo seems to have it capitalized as well. EvanTech10 (talk) 23:54, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If there is consensus for renaming, please consider renaming article titles for other means of railway lines operated by Tokyu, Toei, Tobu, Seibu, Odakyu, Keikyu, Keisei, Keio, Sotetsu, etc. Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 09:36, 31 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You are free to file a separate move request concerning moving those articles. Any discussion not directly pertaining to the Tokyo Metro line articles here falls outside of the scope of this particular discussion. OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 11:16, 31 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
