Genre

the genre of the film is action thriller. Why don't you want it to mention in the page? Arthursunrise (talk) 05:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Listed genres must come from WP:SECONDARY sources with named authors describing the film in prose (rather than automated genre tags on web pages). I've seen good sources saying it is a psychological thriller[1][2] or drama thriller.[3] Roger Ebert described it as an action movie but he did not mention thriller.[4] Hope that helps you decide what to do. Binksternet (talk) 06:33, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why should this not be called a psychologic thriller, if the source describes it thus? Every source will have a different word to use. We have to pick one! Kingsacrificer (talk) 19:51, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if this helps to read: User:Erik/MOS:FILMGENRE. Erik (talk | contrib) 20:06, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good genre guidance there.
If we list a genre in the first sentence, it should be a consensus genre that is found in multiple sources. If Collider and Screenrant are supported by a couple more sources then we can call it a consensus. Binksternet (talk) 20:11, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is good, but why isn't this part of the MOS:FILM guide?
I'll try to search for reliable sources Kingsacrificer (talk) 06:52, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My point in sharing that is that Fight Club can't fit in any one genre since there is no majority of sources that agree on one. This has come up in the past at least twice before as seen here. What I linked above is part of an ongoing discussion since MOS:FILMGENRE has only one sentence. We don't actually have to pick one genre because if sources can't agree definitely on a genre, we can't put forth a definitive genre. It doesn't mean we can't write about genres later in the lead section or the article body. There isn't an absolute truth that any film must fit neatly into a genre. Usually it can, but cases like this can be a messier mix of genres with no satisfying answer. Erik (talk | contrib) 13:02, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I found this BFI source, a French AllCine article, and this Yahoo article. All 3 address Fight Club as atleast a 'thriller'. Some add qualifiers like 'psychological' or 'crime'.
I'm new so I don't know if any of these are considered unreliable. Kingsacrificer (talk) 15:28, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any sources calling it a black comedy or neo-noir? Because I feel like those (as well as psychological thriller) would fit the film incredibly well. CY223 (talk) 07:09, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Says who? SubSeven (talk) 05:42, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Genre 2

On the page for Sinners there is a citation in the opening sentence that describes the film has genre-defying and that it incorporates multiple genres. Perhaps something similar could be added to this pages opening sentence, and possibly include genres such as Black Comedy, Neo-Noir and Psychological Thriller, as long as there are enough sources to support it? CY223 (talk) 17:32, 8 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

There is a part in the article for the films interpretations regarding it’s genre, adding a note that lists a few possible genres and links to the section would be ideal Litterally Knoblets (talk) 01:29, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Given the variance in how it's described, I think leaving the genre unstated in the lead is for the best. If there is a large body of citations describing it a particular way, that should be fleshed out in the body before putting it into the lead. EducatedRedneck (talk) 11:10, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Franchise?

A recent edit, reverted and reimplemented, describes Fight Club as a 20th century franchise and adds it to the category. I have reverted it because I see no mention in the article of it being a franchise. The argument that a video game, blog, and foreign film are based on it are immaterial; while I'd argue those examples wouldn't constitute a franchise, the more important thing is that we need a WP:RS to describe it as a franchise in as many words. To pick a particular criteria to apply to Fight Club is very much WP:SYNTH. Without an RS to describe Fight Club as being a 20th century franchise, we cannot say it is a 20th century franchise.
