Not really any useful information, but Dan Breen is a distant relative of mine. I live in Canada, but own a copy of his book. ??? Who is this?
I added the part about Samuel Fahy helping Dan Breen. Samuel Fahy was my grandfather.Blaise 17:39, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm a non-user, I just like to read stuff on Wikipedia. I also own a copy of "My Fight for Irish Freedom" (I'm the guy who is related to Dan Breen)[ok I just joined now.] Pointy 11:38 6 February, 2006
My fight for Irish freedom
Isn't this just the greatest name anybody could possibly give a book? Classic. They were men in those days, God bless them. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air. 86.44.1.115 (talk) 00:42, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- It does have a ring of Spike Milligan's later classic: Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall.109.78.210.47 (talk) 18:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Politician
I am confused by the remark that Breen "represented Tipperary from the fourth Dáil in 1923...along with...Cathal Brugha, [and] Harry Boland," since the latter two were both killed in 1922. Certainly some kind of edit is needed to clarify this. Spark240 (talk) 12:14, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Hitler reference in Patterson
The reference to the pictures of Hitler in Breen's home has been introduced again. It occurs in a footnote on p94 of Henry Patterson's The Politics of Illusion - A Political History of the IRA. However, Patterson's source is the Irish Times, 'An Irishman's Diary', 24 Feb. 1997, written by John S Monagan . The paraphrase 'He fought for freedom but not for democracy', is Monagan referring to Breen and categorically not a quote from Breen referring to Hitler. Quoting the Monagan newspaper article: "He fought for freedom, he said, but not for democracy. He obviously had an affinity for revolution and this strain ran through his discussion. This, as well as his antipathy to the British and, I think a desire to be outlandish perhaps accounted for the Hitler pictures." Do we retain the quote: Breen explained to him: "He [Hitler] fought for freedom but not for democracy", even though it is clearly a misrepresentation of the original source? RashersTierney (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- I don't see how it is a misrepresentation. It seems you have quoted only the last bit of the newspaper article, as the Hitler pictures seem to be mentioned earlier in the article? Are you saying Breen said of himself that he fought for freedom and not for democracy?--Britannicus (talk) 18:54, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
- That is what Monagan reported of their conversation. The photos were mentioned earlier. Monagan relates of being brought into a room and noticing many pictures on the walls. He goes on:
- "However, one saw with a shock that the pictures included two of Adolph Hitler and a medallion of Napoleon Bonaparte, while the radio was a Telefunken." The article is quite long and can be viewed by subscription at the Irish Times site for the date given above, but these are the only refs to the Hitler pictures. The correct interpretation hardly paints Breen in a shining light, but there is a clear error on Patterson's part in ascribing to Breen a statement he did not make, at least on the basis of the source he provides. The account reports that Breen had a 10,000 price on his head. The wanted poster says 1000. What to do? Say it was 5,500? God bless Breen and Treacy 203.17.235.216 (talk) 01:41, 7 June 2014 (UTC) BelfastJim
