Count Cassius, possibly of the gens Cassii?
Is it possible that Cassius was a member of the Roman gens Cassii? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.35.84.36 (talk) 20:15, 22 April 2007 (UTC).
Count Cassius, date of conversion to Islam
The present article reads as follows:
"Count Cassius converted to Islam in 714, shortly after the Umayyad conquest of Hispania, as a client (mawali) of the Umayyads; his family came to be called the Banu Qasi (Arabic: بنو قَسِىّ, the "sons [or descendants] of Cassius"). Cassius had converted at the hands of the Arab, Hassan ibn Yassar al-Hudhali, qadi in Zaragossa at the time of Abd ar-Rahman's arrival in the peninsula, as a means to preserve his lands and political power".
The two sentences are in open contradiction as Abd ar-Rahman I arrived in Spain only in 755, or fourty-one years after 714! The second sentence seems therefore to need some correction. --W.ehrlich (talk) 21:29, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- Probably, but it could also be a problem with conflicting sources: the tale of Cassius was not recorded until centuries later and in a propagandistic atmosphere that leaves the whole thing suspect, so it could be that the second is more accurate but someone decided it would make a better story had he converted earlier. I will have to see what the sources say about it. Agricolae (talk) 22:00, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
