Talk:Back to the Beginning

Fred Durst

I was there in person and Fred Durst performing "Changes" was NOT shown on screen in between sets (unlike e.g. "Mr. Crowley" by Jack Black, which was). I was genuinely surprised when I saw in this article that such performance was part of the event... We saw no trace of Fred Durst yesterday at Villa Park! In fact my friend and I were thinking he must have been the artist that Sharon dropped for demanding payment.

I suggest putting some sort of note that Fred Durst's performance was "live stream only" 37.1.99.58 (talk) 22:46, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The wording says that several pre-recorded performances were "aired" which means they were broadcast to people not in attendance. That wording is sufficiently clear; no need to make any changes. Binksternet (talk) 00:16, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Clarified. Were the spoken tributes (Elton John, Dolly Parton, et al) also only online? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:34, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Proceeds

The source used to cite our claim that "the concert raised £140 million..." does not say that. It says:

With well over £140 million, the local Birmingham Children's Hospital, Acorn's Children's Hospice, and Cure Parkinson's will be the recipients of the successful resulting fundraiser from the concert.

but it does not say whether the amount, which is not given as precisely as we claim, is net profit or gross income. It's also doubtful that an exact figure could be known by the day after the event.

The source is a FanSided site, and as such is not to be considered reliable, for such a remarkable claim. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:24, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The author is a reporter who exclusively covers Aston Villa F.C. - if anyone would know the dollar figures, it's him: "Taking into account the online viewing figures and the profit from yesterday’s Black Sabbath show, it is estimated that the gig could raise up to 140 Million for Birmingham Children’s hospital and Acorns and Parkinson’s charities.". And also remember that the livestream cost £30 and had 5.8 million concurrent streams (30 x 5.8 million = £174 million) and Ozzy covered the travel expenses for everyone involved. So the ticket revenue/stream revenue less the expenses equaling £140 million is not unreasonable. The Freddie Mercury Tribute concert originally announced they had raised $25 million, but then after the cost of travel accommodations was deducted, it was closer to $8 million. Why would a football reporter who excursively covers one club know the takings from a concert? That's a non sequitur.
So now we have one source that says "well over", and another that says "up to" (and that only an estimate). Those are not the same.
Whatever the livestream's gross income, we have no source for what proportion of it was taken in taxes, fees or other costs.
The issue is not reasonableness, but verifiability. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:06, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, one must ask themselves - "how could a reporter who covers the football team which owns the stadium that Back to the Beginning took place in have sources that would be able to confirm dollar figures related to the concert's production?". A true mystery of the world. You've got me there. TheNewMinistry (talk) 16:34, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
From the director of the event, Tom Morello: Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath Raise $190 Million in Charity Aid.
Converted to British currency...that's £140 million. TheNewMinistry (talk) 23:11, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's also a reliable source, unlike the first, which (apparently falsely) claimed well over £140 million. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:50, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
