Nadia Carlsten is a technology executive known for her work in artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing and high-performance computing infrastructure. She was the founding chief executive officer (CEO) of the Danish Centre for AI Innovation (DCAI), the organization established to operate Denmark's national AI supercomputer, Gefion.[1][2]

Education

Carlsten studied at the University of Virginia and later earned a PhD in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.[3][4]

Career

Early career

Carlsten worked at the United States Department of Energy in 2013 and later at the United States Department of Homeland Security from 2016 to 2019.

Amazon Web Services

Carlsten joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2019.[3] In 2020, she joined the Amazon Braket team as a senior technical product manager and later became head of product at the AWS Center for Quantum Computing.[5]

SandboxAQ

In 2022, Carlsten joined SandboxAQ as vice president of product.[6] SandboxAQ is a technology company that was spun out from Google parent company Alphabet. Carlsten worked on product development and strategy at the company until 2024.[3] In August 2024, it was reported that she would leave SandboxAQ to lead Denmark's AI supercomputer initiative.[7]

Danish Centre for AI Innovation

In August 2024, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and Denmark's Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) announced Carlsten's appointment as CEO of Danish Centre for AI Innovation A/S (DCAI).[1][8][9]

DCAI was established to operate Gefion, Denmark's national AI supercomputer. The system was developed in collaboration with Nvidia to support AI research and industrial innovation.[10][11]

In October 2024, Gefion officially became operational in Copenhagen. The launch event was attended by Frederik X of Denmark, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Carlsten.[12][13][14]

Media reports described Gefion as one of Europe's largest AI supercomputers and part of Denmark's efforts to expand AI research capacity.[9][11]

In January 2026, DCAI announced that Carlsten would step down as CEO following the launch of the organization and the Gefion platform.[15][16]

Other activities

Carlsten joined the board of directors of digital health company Dawn Health.[17]

She has also spoken at technology and quantum computing conferences, including Quantum + AI in New York City.[18]
