Habib Davanloo

Habib Davanloo (October 10, 1927 – November 2023[1]) was a Canadian psychoanalyst and psychiatric researcher who worked in Montreal, Quebec, and developed intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP). He was Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University[2][3] and founding editor of the International Journal of Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy.[4]

Background

Habib Davanloo was a Canadian psychiatric researcher of Iranian origin. Davanloo was a psychiatric resident under Erich Lindemann, a German psychiatrist who specialized in the treatment of bereaved and traumatized patients.[5] On April 18, 2024, it was announced that Davanloo had died at the age of 96.[6]

Career

Davanloo was the director of the Institute for Teaching and Research in Short-term and Dynamic Psychotherapy at the Montreal General Hospital.[7] In 1962 he began to develop his technique for treating patients on a short-term basis,[8] creating and studying videotapes of sessions. He later gave seminars about his research and made the videotapes available.[9][10]

Davanloo's methods, which according to some authors were based on resolving Oedipal conflicts,[11] were widely discussed in psychiatric literature and[12] successfully used by many other therapists.[13][14]
