Yukiko Akagi (Japanese: 赤木 有季子) is a Japanese classical pianist based in Barcelona, Spain. She has performed throughout Europe and the United States. Since 2026, she has served as Artistic Director and President of the Jury of the Maria Canals International Music Competition.[1][2]
Career
Akagi studied at the Toho Conservatory in Tokyo before continuing her education at Mannes College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
She made her American debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2004. Since then, she has performed at venues including Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall at Lincoln Center, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, the Palau de la Música Catalana, L'Auditori Barcelona and the Palau de la Música de València.
She has appeared as soloist with the National Orchestra of Spain, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. She has also premiered works by Ramón Humet and Benet Casablancas.[3]
Akagi was awarded Second Prize at the Maria Canals International Music Competition in 2005.[4]
Since 2023, she has served annually as a member of the competition's international jury, and in 2026 she was appointed Artistic Director and President of the Jury.[1][2][5]
Recordings
In 2024, Akagi released Vocalise, an album devoted to works by Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Reviewing the recording, Revista Musical Catalana praised her interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli as "a reference interpretation" and described her pianism as refined and thoughtful.[6]
A review of her 2023 recital at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Revista Musical Catalana praised her technical command, musicality and interpretations of works by Chopin and Rachmaninoff.[7]
